In 1912, the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women founded the Pi Beta Phi Settlement School in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, as a service initiative commemorating the organization’s 50th anniversary. As the school grew, the fraternity expanded its mission to include rural health services and the revival of the mountain crafts industry. The Impact of Arrowcraft on Gatlinburg. When Pi Beta Phi Settlement School teachers Lois Rogers and Harmo Taylor founded Arrowcraft in 1927, they viewed the shop as something of an experiment -- one designed to bring order to the informal, rather chaotic system by which the settlement school staff purchased and marketed handicraft items on behalf of local artisans.

In honor of Pi Beta Phi founder Jennie Nicol--in a renovated cottage on the Settlement School grounds. From the clinic, Higinbotham provided a variety of medical services to Gatlinburg residents and Settlement School students: physical examinations, inoculations, first aid to the injured, and free clothing and medical supplies for those in need. The Pi Beta Phi Settlement School of Gatlinburg, Tennessee began as a one-room schoolhouse built through the support of the national Pi Beta Phi fraternity for women. The group chose the Gatlinburg region because they considered it an Appalachian site where educational, economic, and healthcare developments were desperately needed.
